GUIDED ACTIVITY: Don't Look Up - Spring Edition
What can you learn about the flora and fauna just by looking down? Join Docent Naturalists Nancy Weintraub, Helena Cohen, Nick Yatsko, and Marie Faust Evitt for this second installment of a four-season series to practice your observational skills, remembering the guideline "don't look up.” You'll begin this moderately-paced hike by exploring the Douglas fir and redwood forests along a route including the Sierra Moreno, Steam Donkey, Timberview, and Methuselah trails. Investigating what is emerging from the trees and bushes this spring, you’ll ask: What are the signs of animals roaming the preserves? What about the little things such as the lichen and moss? What about evidence of human people? You'll have an opportunity to see, feel, and hear the undergrowth in a fresh, engaged way as you observe from the ground up. Bring a snack for a short break.

VOLUNTEER PROJECT: Picchetti Ranch Preserve - Trail Maintenance: Zinfandel Trail
NOTE: Preference will be given to first-time volunteers for this project.
Join Midpen staff for a trail maintenance workday at Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve on the Zinfandel Trail. Did you know there's a working winery and tasting room at this preserve? We will be clearing accumulated soil from the uphill side of the trail to restore the tread width, making minor tread improvements, and trimming vegetation if needed. This will probably be our concluding project on this trail for the year. Staff will provide training on hand tool safety and guide volunteers in performing typical maintenance activities. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!
Project difficulty: MODERATE (about 1 mi of hiking with tools and 1 mi without)
VOLUNTEER PROJECT: Long Ridge Preserve/Conley Cabin - Habitat Restoration
Join Midpen staff for a fun workday removing invasive French broom at the Conley Cabin site at Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. Staff will provide training on plant identification, removal techniques, and information about why we want to remove this plant from our local landscape. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!

GUIDED ACTIVITY: Trail Trek Thursday
Trail Treks, scheduled on the last Thursday of the month, provide exercise-focused hikes and opportunities to discover Midpen's beautiful preserves.
Hit the trails with Docent Naturalists Nancy Weintraub, Nick Yatsko, and Bobbie Riedel for a moderately-paced loop trek with 800-foot climb along Saratoga Gap and Achistaca trails to the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail. You'll appreciate shady mixed evergreen forest, steep canyons, a visit to Turtle Rock, and grassy ridges with sweeping vistas westward across thousands of acres of forested land. Bring a snack for a scenic stop along the way.
