GUIDED AVTIVITY: Waterwheel Downhill Ride
Join Docent Naturalists Dave Kocsis, Steve Crawford, An Scharlaken, and Peter Maxwell for an advanced mountain bike ride on fun trails with outstanding views in memory of our friend and Midpen Docent Naturalist Strether Smith. You’ll carpool from Picchetti Ranch Preserve to the beautiful Waterwheel Creek Trail and ride the single track and fire roads in Monte Bello Preserve, including Bella Vista, Canyon, White Oak, and Skid Road trails, before taking Stevens Canyon Road back to the carpool location. The mostly downhill route (2,200-foot net descent) includes 1,700+ feet of climbing. Approximately five miles of the ride is on public roadways. Bring snacks or a light lunch to eat at breaks along the way. Reservations are required and will be accepted on or after May 3 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) and close May 15 at 2:00 p.m.

Enjoy wide views of the ocean and forested valleys along the Ipiwa Trail with Docent Naturalists Mary Brunkhorst, Nick Yatsko, and Kate Bauer. You’ll take a leisurely-paced trek through a mosaic of habitats including chaparral, mixed evergreen forest, and oak woodlands on your way to a lunch stop at Alpine Pond. Head back via Sunny Jim and Ridge trails with a stop at Horseshoe Lake.

Female birds have long been overlooked, understudied, and unfairly dismissed as quieter or less behaviorally complex than their male counterparts. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Get an early morning start with Docent Naturalists Melissa Hero and Cathy Brown on #FemaleBirdDay. You’ll take a leisurely-paced hike around Sausal Pond via the Spring Ridge and Betsy Crowder trails with the intention of paying specific attention to the remarkable behaviors, roles, and contributions of female birds to the avian world.

GUIDED AVTIVITY: Wildflower Appreciation Afternoon
Last year during the end of May, wildflowers were bursting along the North Ridge Trail, luring pollinators, songbirds, and human appreciators of beauty. Will the blossoms be as prolific and impressive this year? Come find out! Join Interpretive Specialist Katie Renz and Docent Naturalists Marie Faust Evitt and Alison Hurst for a leisurely-paced (but hilly), out-and-back hike. You’ll zoom out to take in ocean views while also zooming in to study the small parts that make up the center of the flower. You’ll learn about basic botany, pollinator syndromes, and some plant names but, beyond identifying, you’ll have an opportunity to practice deeply looking. Hiking poles and a snack recommended; carpooling encouraged as this parking area fills quickly on weekends.

GUIDED AVTIVITY: Blue Moon on Black Mountain Hike
Hike one of the peninsula’s iconic peaks while appreciating the twilight on an evening excursion with Docent Naturalists Dave Kocsis, Lindsay Joye, and Stephen Buckhout. You’ll ramble the Canyon Trail and climb the scenic Bella Vista Trail observing late spring flora and fauna, then watch the sun set and the full moon rise from Black Mountain’s summit while enjoying the snack or meal you brought. You’ll earn extraordinary views of the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains. This is a strenuous but moderately-paced hike with a 1,000-foot elevation gain. Reservations are required and will be accepted on or after May 17 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) and close May 29 at 2:00 p.m.

Join La Honda Elementary students in the official 2026 La Honda Art & Music Fair kickoff Parade and keep the historical La Honda Days alive!
Who doesn't LOVE a parade?
We begin at Reflection Lake a.k.a. Cuesta Pond & follow Entrada Way down the hill and across HWY 84 to the LH Market & Fair main entrance.
Everyone is invited & welcome to join! Get your floats ready, put on your patchouli oil, find your hula hoop, create those kinetic sculptures, wave your flag, find your favorite parasol, blow some bubbles, get your groove on, wear your tie dye, paint your peace signs, be your own marching band and bang that drum, blow your horn, dress up in costume, drive a tractor, wear those beads, bring your passion, ring a cow bell, drive that vintage car, ride your bicycle, CELEBRATE, pass along some PEACE , be in a parade!
Line up will begin at 9:45 and the parade will commence at 10:00 a.m led by the LH Fire Brigade! {Thank you La Honda Fire Brigade Volunteers, we LOVE you}

Celebrate happiness on a late afternoon, leisurely-paced out-and-back hike to Stevens Creek on the White Oak Trail led by Docent Naturalists Catherine Crawford-Swent, Marie Faust Evitt, and Bobbie Riedel. Along the way you’ll discuss approaches to cultivating happiness, followed by a stop at the base of a large valley oak tree for a 40-minute qigong lesson. This ancient and gentle exercise practice is inspired by nature and offers the potential to invigorate your life force energy, increase physical vitality, and help reduce stress. No prior experience needed.

Join Docent Naturalists Ani Agahian, Mary Ann Frank, Minh Pham for a serene sunset adventure. You and your dog (or just you!) will travel the Betsy Crowder Trail around Sausal Pond on this moderately‐paced hike before beginning your ascent partway up Spring Ridge Trail for spectacular views of the Santa Clara Valley. Along the way you’ll dive into the rich history of the land and explore nature’s nightlife.

GUIDED AVTIVITY: Sunset from the Ridge Hike
Enjoy a moderately-paced evening hike with Docent Naturalists Ann Reisenauer, Susan Bernhard, Noa Doitel, and Maureen Draper. You’ll take the Ancient Oaks and Ridge trails to Borel Hill where you’ll look out over the Bay Area and identify Mt. Diablo and other landmarks. On the return trip you’ll follow the Bo Gimbal and Ancient Oaks trails, noting how wildflowers and birds respond to the approaching dusk. After the hike, you’ll walk over to the Audrey C. Rust Commemorative Site.
